Being Gluten Free... & What We Did In...Anchorage, Alaska

December 21, 2017

So, getting paid to speak at a conference in which you get a free trip to Anchorage is pretty awesome.  Getting to have your husband come along when you are 6 months pregnant with your first is a HUGE bonus!  Luckily, I have a friend with celiac who lives in Anchorage, and she had amazing suggestions and we did our best to try them all!

Alaska Airlines

I always pack plenty of food for flights, especially long ones like this.  But I was pleasantly surprised by the options Alaska Airlines provided.  Read more about Alaska Airlines (and airports and other airlines in THIS post).  If you wonder what I travel with in general, especially internationally, check out THIS post.

What I ate

Middle Way Cafe

1200 W Northern Lights Blvd

Anchorage, AK 99503

We kind of loved this place. They have an allergen note for kitchen and seem to take great caution! So we ate here twice. The first day we split lunch and ordered a half turkey cranberry sandwich, half soup of the day, but got a full sandwich. It was good enough to come back! The second day I got the avocado melt and added turkey. Seriously go here. Plus they have tons of veggie and vegan options! ...and great coffee :) PS... the delicious GIANT gf, vegan cookie is sitting next to a cup for size reference.

AND, this place deserves another shootout for having ready to go baked goods all individually wrapped or in the bake case. I can vouch for one of the cakes ;)

Hearth Artisan Pizza

1200 W Northern Lights Blvd

Anchorage, AK 99503

Anchorage, Alaska: Hearth Artisan Pizza We shared the gluten free Sweet Carmela and added mushrooms - they were oyster mushrooms, which super threw me off as they are not my fav. My friend had said this was the best pizza crust ever - it was super thin, and although good, I've had better - sorry Cara ;) They had tons of unique toppings and offered lots of great vegetarian options and daiya cheese.

Snow City Cafe

1034 W 4th Ave

Anchorage, AK 99501

A cute place with locally made pottery to buy hanging on the walls. Great gluten free options as well as vegan and vegetarian. It's one of those super popular brunch type places and we waited about 45 minutes to get in, but the wait was worth it, yum! I got the classic combo - grilled cheese with cream of tomato soup and a house salad and my husband had the spicy fish tacos with hashbrowns (extra crispy) that were also gluten free.

Spenard Roadhouse

1049 W Northern Lights Blvd

Anchorage, AK 99503

Highly recommended by a celiac friend, I was especially excited about the gluten free tater tots with smoked paprika aioli as an app to share (tots in separate fryer) - I think these are my first tator tots at a restaurant in 6 years! And they were like, for real good! As a group we also shared the garlic parmesan popcorn. I also had the shredded brisket, it was good but a little too meaty for me, could almost only taste the meat, the bread was good though and held up well, a thing gluten free bun eaters always have to comment on ;)

Moose's Tooth Pub & Pizzeria

300 Old Seward Hwy

Anchorage, AK 99503

After being disappointed that the gluten free appetizer menu had nothing two dip appetizers, but nothing to use dip into it (as in, chips made in house and fried with other things), I was super happy with the amazing pizza! The crust was fantastic!

This picture just didn't turn out.  Pizza in a dark setting did not look appetizing...but I swear it was really good!

South Restaurant + Coffeehouse

11124 Old Seward Hwy

Anchorage, AK 99515

So much gluten free tapas! Having been in southern Spain overdoing tapas in March, we were long overdue for a tapas night (granted tapas in the US is done pretty differently). There were 3 of us so we got the 10 tapas deal.

In my pictures you can see...

Seared beef tips Chorizo empanada

Truffle polenta fries

House marinated Spanish olives

Oysters

Mushroom Apollo Gambas

Hummus Tuna crudo (not gf)

Chorizo and caramelized onion

Almost everything is offered gluten free! They did bring out bread for the table and brought a separate plate of gf bread. Plus, I'm pregnant and they had a great non-alcoholic cocktail drink list, so that was a nice treat :)

For desert: My grandma called it schaum torte, but another name for it is pavlova... and we are this at every holiday! I have never seen it on a menu so I just HAD to order it... and apparently dig in before taking the picture ;) It is pretty much sugar and egg white and gooey and gets stuck in your teeth, but it is so good and reminds me of childhood :)

Natural Pantry Grocery Store

3680 Barrow St

Anchorage, AK 99599

Great place to pick up everything specialty.  Larger than your typical Whole Foods and with a much wider selection.  We found a ton of things here that I hadn't seen before.  I wish I had one in Milwaukee!

Plus...just look at how much they want you to know they have gluten free...LOL!

Also. Eat this.

What We Did...

Beluga Point

From Anchorage, the Turnagain Arm drive portion of the Seward Highway (Hwy 1) an amazingly beautiful drive (as it is to continue all the way to Seward). Near Anchorage however, is a popular stopping point called Beluga Point.  And guess what?  We got to see beluga whales!  Apparently there are far fewer beluga's than there used to be, so seeing them has become rarer.  This is still a really fun area to stop and climb around.  (See the beluga??? The white thing in the water? It's there, I promise!)

Potter Marsh

A really nice little viewing area right outside of Anchorage at the start of Hwy 1.
