Gluten Free In...Wisconsin - Milwaukee Metropolitan Area

Wisconsin can really be hit or miss depending on where you are in the state, but for the most part, there are fantastic options! I live in the Milwaukee area, and there are some fantastic places to eat - check out my reviews below (in alphabetical order)! I'll continue to add them as I visit more places. I have been to tons more than the ones listed below as well, but some of them were a while ago. I feel better adding them as I visit, to make sure the standards are still the same.

Bay View

Transfer Pizza

101 W Mitchell St, Milwaukee, WI 53204

Fantastic gluten free pizza with a homemade gluten free crust.

The Coffee House at Chestnut & Pine (2017)

492 N Pine St, Burlington, WI 53105

We stopped in for a coffee, and asked if they could do gluten free. While they don't list gluten free on their menu, they were very knowledgeable and had gluten free bread and understood cross-contamination. I got the Roasted Chicken Sandwich served with gluten free corn tortilla chips. And although it wasn't gluten free, my husband had the Bacon Chicken Flatbread and loved it!

Beans & Barley

1901 E North Ave, Milwaukee, WI 53202

This is a place that can accommodate anything! They have a great gluten free, vegetarian and vegan menu. I even went here once on a very strict anti-inflammation paleo type diet (with a group, I try never to do this to staff!) and they brought out a recipe book with every ingredient to help me find a meal! I have been here loads of times and they are aware of and will take precautions for cross-contamination. My favorite is the Sweet Potato & Bean Burrito. The walnut burger is AMAZING, but is not gluten free unfortunately. I use to eat it before my celiac days. They also have a great little shop you should peruse! And, if you get a chance, try Indulgence Chocolates (picture on the left) - they have a number of stand alone shops around town too, and nearly everything is gluten free. Trust me - I've tried most of it ;)

Blues Egg

317 N 76th St, Milwaukee, WI 53213

One of our favorites, especially for brunch. Be prepared to have an extensive wait...45-60 minutes at least for 2 people. They can do most of their menu gluten free. I love the creamy polenta, but the fonduta sauce is not gluten free (I substitute with a red sauce). They make their own gluten free pancakes and delicious bread and even have a separate toaster.

And the hashbrowns are TO DIE FOR!

Classy Girl Cupcakes (10/2017)

2 Locations: Milwaukee and Brookfield

My family ordered this adorable 2-tiered gluten free cake from Classy Girl Cupcakes! It was dense, like most gluten free cake is...I mean like it was actually really heavy to lift this cake! But it was a great flavor and beautiful.

Crazy Water

818 E Center St, Milwaukee, WI 53212

Fantastic for a nice date night. We had the medjool dates and pork belly appetizers, and I had the scallops for dinner. We make scallops pretty well at home, so I'm always leary ordering them out, but these were great!

Engine Company No. 3 (2017)

217 W National Ave, Milwaukee, WI 53204

I have been here for breakfast and lunch and they have a fantastic gluten free menu, and a dedicated fryer! The below picture is of my breakfast visit with the Kolbasz & Paprika Krumpli (smoked Hungarian pork sausage, sweet potato puree and an egg). Really simple, but very good.

Engine Company No. 3: Milwaukee, WI

Fuel Cafe (2017)

818 E Center St, Milwaukee, WI 53212

They do a pretty good job with gluten free and understand cross-contamination (and have a dedicated fryer - but the fries weren't that good. Their gf bread is pretty terrible, and the burger was underwhelming. What they do really well though is the Korean Bowl! Below is a picture of my friend's with shrimp, I just get the vegetarian.

Morel Restaurant (3/2016)

430 S 2nd St, Milwaukee, WI 53204

Morel is a farm-to-table restaurant focusing on local Wisconsin produce and animal products. As a farm-to-table, the menu changes quite frequently. I believe we tried the charcuterie board and the cheese board (we were there with a group, don't judge). The charcuterie isn't going to be a sliced sausage platter, be prepared for pates and some, uh, unique meat products. For dinner we had the beef short rib. Most everything is made to order and they are very willing to accommodate for gluten free - most of the menu is naturally or can be with easy substitutions.

Original Pancake House

Lots of locations

They have tons of gluten free options, although I really couldn't find this on the menu. They can do great gluten free pancakes and don't add batter to their scrambled eggs (some pancake places so to make them fluffier!)

Screaming Tuna (2017)

106 W Seeboth St, Milwaukee, WI 53204

Mmm...sushi! We love this place and eat there often. They are incredibly good at accommodating for gluten free. They do list gluten free options on the menu, but will work around most rolls/meals to make them work. They will even do a gluten free tempura batter in a separate pan if you're willing to wait! just make sure to clarify celiac to them.

Simple Cafe (2017)

2124 N Farwell Ave, Milwaukee, WI 53202

Although they don't specifically list gluten free on their menu, this place is great at accommodating for gluten free, vegetarian, vegan, and other food restrictions. They don't offer gluten free bread, but with their wide selection, you won't need it! Plus, they serve breakfast all day. The last time I was there I think I had a lunch Harvest Frittata which was super good.

Stack'd Burger Bar (2017)

170 S 1st St, Milwaukee, WI 53204

Dedicated fryer! Yes, fries, sweet potato fries, and even chicken tenders! All gluten free! They also have great burgers, but the buns are pretty awful. I go here for comfort sweet potato fries honestly. I really wish they'd get better gluten free buns. But if you're into the no bun thing, they have bison, beef, chicken and more, plus amazing toppings. They also have cider and a few gluten free beers available. (PS...if you like root beer, you have to try locally made Sprecher root beer - as seen in the photo).

Thai-namite (2017)

932 E. Brady St., Milwaukee, WI 53211

8725 W. North Ave., Wauwatosa, WI 53226

Milwaukee Public Market: 400 N. Water St. Milwaukee, WI 53202

I've only been to the public market location, but they have a gluten free menu if you ask for one. They will clean all of the equipment. As of the last time I was there, they did not have gluten free soy sauce to cook with, but have packets you can add after. Perhaps the full scale restaurant locations do? I tend to always get the green curry because it's amazing. Beware, the mild is still pretty spicy (for me anyway, I'm not a huge spicy fan, but my husband is and even he sweats when he eats their "mild").

The Cheel (9/2016)

105 S Main St, Thiensville, WI 53092

I can't say it better than they did:

"Welcome to the cheel, where we are serving up fresh flavor altitude and farm-to-fork attitude in every scratch-crafted morsel...from the himalayas to the rockies

the cheel is all about the authentic flavors and ancient food preparation techniques of Nepal. Led by owners Barkha and Jesse Daily, both of whom grew up cooking with their families from a very young age - Barkha in Kathmandu, Jesse in Idaho - the cheel is a place for food adventurers, enthusiasts, and aficionados willing to try new things."

The Cheel is one of my favorite restaurants - totally unique and much of the menu is gluten free! Last time there we got the duck boat and the boar and chicken variety platter.

Gigi's Cupcakes (1/2017)

2751 N. Mayfair Road, Suite G, Wauwatosa, WI 53222

*many locations

I can only speak to the Wauwatosa location, but they have tons of gluten free cupcake options. However, if you want gluten free for celiac or a very strong intolerance, they will make them separate for you. They could not gaurantee that the one's in the display were gluten free. I ordered some for a party and they made them first thing in the morning on all freshly cleaned equipment - I was not the only person who had made a request like this. They were really, really, good.

Sorry for the blurry picture:

Gigi's Cupcakes: Wauwatosa, Wisconsin

Hue Vietnamese (2017)

6519 West North Avenue Wauwatosa, WI 53213

2691 South Kinnickinnic Ave. Milwaukee, WI 53207

Although they can do quite a bit of their food gluten free, I wasn't totally blown away by it. I had the beef skewers and chicken pho. Then again, we were in Vietnam about a year before visiting here, so I might have had real Vietnamese pho on my mind.

Pizzeria Piccola (2015)

7606 W State St, Wauwatosa, WI 53213

They do deliver, which is rare for gluten free pizza. However, it really ins't my favorite. It's been a bit since I was there last, but the crust was very thing and almost too crispy (my FAVORITE pizza place in Milwaukee is Roman Candle - hands down!) But, if you're on this side of town they can safely make pizza!

Smoke Shack (12/2017)

11320 W Burleigh St, Wauwatosa, WI 53222

Not the best BBQ in the world, but, all of the meat and bbq sauces are gluten free and there are a few gluten free sides. However, no gluten free bread is available. So be prepared to just eat meat and a few veggies or a potato. I've only eaten there once and we ordered takeout: pulled pork, brisket, sausage, brussels sprouts, vinegar cole slaw, 4 bbq sauces: kansas city, texas bbq, carolina gold, house bbq.

Wauwatiki (7/2017)

7606 W State St, Wauwatosa, WI 53213

100% Gluten Free! The only things that might not be are some of the mixed drinks and beer. But the entire menu is gluten free and it is FANTASTIC! We tried a bunch of things just to check it out: pupu platter, luau sandwich and the loco moco. Definitely check this place out.

Whitefish Bay

Roman Candle

133 E Silver Spring Dr, Whitefish Bay, WI 53217

BEST gluten free pizza in the Milwaukee area. BEST. It is not a dedicated facility unfortunately, but they do understand cross-contamination and take precautions. Of course, it is a pizza place, so there could be flour in the air. Full disclosure, I am celiac and have never had a problem, but I don't get very strong reactions.

Grocery Stores

Good Harvest

2205 Silvernail Rd, Pewaukee, WI 53072

Similar to Outpost, a really nice grocery store with tons of gluten free, allergen and dietary restriction options. It's a little further out of the city going east. They carry some different brands than Outpost.

Outpost Co-Op

Around the city

Outpost is a great place to find gluten free items, both packaged and locally made. Different stores carry some different brands, although it's typically the same. They do serve food, and some of the locations are better at accommodating than others. I eat at the Wauwatosa one fairly frequently - they carry gluten free bread and will be very careful with any cross-contamination.

Woodman's Market

Around the state, and a few in Illinois

Don't be fooled by the term "market", this is likely the largest grocery store you have ever stepped foot in...I mean like football fields - like Costco but JUST groceries. However, where many of the smaller stores have to charge more for their specialty items, like gluten free foods, you will hands-down get the best deals at Woodman's, and can find most anything there. They do NOT take credit card though, I know they take debit or cash (not sure about checks, and there is only one cash machine inside, so if it's broken...). They also have a gigantic liquor store.
